1040 - Military Address

How do I enter a military address for a taxpayer on screen 1?

The U.S. Postal Service has established standard Postal ZIP codes for APO/FPO addresses. Returns with the incorrect city/state/ZIP combination will be rejected.

The street address and ZIP code are entered as applicable.

The city should be either APO or FPO depending on whether it is an Army Post Office or a Fleet Post Office.

The state will be one of the following:

  • AA = Armed Forces Americas
  • AE = Armed Forces Europe, Africa, Canada, Middle East
  • AP = Armed Forces Pacific

Do not attempt to choose AA, AE, or AP in the Resident State drop list. Choose the applicable resident state or select zero (0) to suppress all state returns.

In the County line, enter the resident county for their applicable resident state. The taxpayer's resident state is generally the state that they were a resident of when the taxpayer enlisted.

A military address within the United States is entered as a regular address, with the checkbox Stateside military address marked.
