How do I file a New York individual extension, NY-IT-370?
A New York extension for an individual return can be e-filed with a federal extension, or with the main federal return.
Important: NY-EXMSG message pages must be cleared before you can transmit the extension.
In order to generate NY Form IT-370, complete the STEX screen. See Related Links below for details on this screen.
NY requires full payment with balance due extensions. Complete the PMT screen before electronically filing the extension using State/City selection code NYE.
Ensure that you have not marked Extension was previously filed; ready to file state/city tax return on the STX2 screen. If you mark this checkbox prior to filing the extension, your return will not generate Form IT-370 for electronic transmission. After the extension has been filed, and you are ready to file the regular NY return, use the STX2 screen to indicate this.
