Schedule A - Medical Expenses

Where do I enter medical expenses?

If a taxpayer chooses to itemize deductions, medical and dental expenses can be entered on Schedule A. When entering in medical miles on the Schedule A, enter in the number of miles driven for medical purposes, not the amount of the deduction calculated (by multiplying the number of miles by the mileage rate).

Notes: Medicare premiums entered on the SSA screen also carry to line 1 of the Schedule A. If health insurance premiums are entered on screens C, F, or SEHI, the amount that is not deductible on Schedule 1 (SEHID) flows to Schedule A.

Eligible taxpayers may only deduct medical and dental expenses exceeding 7.5% of their adjusted gross income (AGI).

Note: For more information about the limitations for each year, see Publication 17 and the Schedule A Instructions.
