When an individual tax return has eligible child dependents, an 8615 Export toolbar menu option appears on the View/Print dialogs (both in Basic and Enhanced view modes). Selecting dependents for export begins a two-step process that ultimately updates or creates a form 8615 in a child’s return, and imports the needed parent’s information automatically.

Step 1 – Export Dependent Information

    1. Within the View/Print process where an Individual return has dependent children, the toolbar includes an 8615 Export button. To begin the process, click this button. The "8615 Export Utility" dialog opens.
    2. Select the item(s) needed for export, and click Export.

Note:

Select as many items from the displayed list as needed.

    1. The application confirms a successful export, and the utility dialog updates the status to Exported.
    2. Continue exporting other items, or click Exit to close the dialog.

Step  2 – Import Parent Information

Once a successful export is completed, the next time the child’s return is opened, the preparer is alerted to the found 8615 file ready for import. At that time, the found file can be imported, stored for future use, or removed.

    1. Select File > Open/Create a New Return.
    2. Enter an exported child’s SSN/EIN, and click OK.
    3. The application alerts the preparer that an 8615 file was located and is ready for use if needed. The preparer can choose from the following:
      • Selecting Yes updates or create the needed 8615 form with the needed parent’s return information. Items imported from the parent’s return are:
        • First Name
        • Last Name
        • SSN
        • Filing Status
        • Taxable Income
        • Tax
      • Selecting No allows you to choose to remove the 8615 file or leave it for later.
      • Selecting Cancel returns you to the "Open/Create a New Return" dialog.
