Change File Type converts a client data file from the existing file type to a different file type.
IMPORTANT: Before converting files, make a backup of the original data file. Not ALL information is transferred during the file type conversion.
The following information is transferred during each type of conversion:
- Name
- Address
- Telephone
- County
- Fiscal Year
- All Depreciation
- Information entered on screens 6, 7, and 8 (form 4562 data entry screens)
In addition, the following are transferred when converting an S corporation to a full corporation, or a full corporation to an S corporation:
- Balance Sheet
- Schedule A
- 4864
- 5884
- 6478
- 6781
- 7004
- 8271
- Client Bill
Changing File Types
- Go to Tools > File Maintenance > Change File Type.
- In Client Selection, either type the SSN/EIN or select the client from the list.
- Click Continue. The available file type choices appear.
Note
The current return type is disabled to stop a redundant choice from being made.
- Select the desired new file type.
- Click Continue.
IMPORTANT: It is not recommended to change a file type more than once. Multiple changes can cause a loss of data.
