Carol Campbell, IRS Return Preparer Office Director, recently promoted the IRS’s voluntary Annual Filing Season Program on Facebook. The post shared many details about the program including:

-          Reasons why preparers should participate

-          Requirements for the AFSP

-          Exceptions from the Annual Federal Tax Refresher Course and Test

In addition to the Facebook post, the IRS plans to send emails in the near future promoting the program to PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number) holders.

The IRS forges ahead with the voluntary program, in the midst of increasing scrutiny and two law suits: AICPA is challenging the AFSP program itself, while tax preparers have formed a class-action suit to challenge the annual fee associated with PTIN registration.
