Stolen SSNs Used to Hack IRS E-Filing PIN App
Over 100,000 E-File PINs Accessed
This week, the IRS released a statement regarding an automated attack on the E-Filing PIN application on their website that involved stolen Social Security numbers. Stressing that the identity thieves stole the 464,000 unique SSNs elsewhere, the IRS stopped the attack and has taken steps to help protect involved accounts - marking them for tax-related ID theft and sharing information with Security Summit partners.
According to the agency, this attack is not related to the hardware failure that occurred last week, which caused e-filing services to go down for 24 hours.
