Prepare for the 1040 Filing Deadline

The October 16 deadline is right around the corner. While those in federal disaster areas have been granted additional time to file, other filers on extension must file by Monday, October 16, 2023, as the standard October 15 deadline falls on a Sunday.

Returns must be filed by midnight local time. Drake Software strongly suggests e-filing several hours before the deadline to ensure a timely filing.

When you are ready to file an extended return in Drake Tax:

  1. Navigate to screen EXT.
  2. Mark the Extension was previously filed; ready to file tax return check box.
  3. On screen EF, under FEDERAL E-FILE OVERRIDE, uncheck the 4868 check box.
  4. Recalculate and transmit the return. Refer to Knowledge Base article “17624: Preparing for the Individual Deadline” for more information.

The perfection period for 1040 returns is five days. You can retransmit the return more than once during the perfection period, but any transmission after the perfection period is considered a late filing.
