How can I correct reject IND-116-01?
If you receive reject IND-116-01, confirm the following information:
- First and last name (as reported on the dependent’s Social Security (SS) card)
- SSN (as reported on the dependent’s SS card)
- Date of birth (DOB)*
If any changes are needed for the dependent, they can be made within data entry of the return on Screen 2 - Dependents.
If both the SSN and DOB are accurate, there may be an error in the Social Security Administration's (SSA) records. To correct any errors that may be present, the taxpayer can contact the SSA at 1 (800) 772-1213. Generally, the return will need to be paper filed in this case.
*The date of birth for dependents is verified by the IRS against the SSA’s records. Per the SSA’s records, the dependent in question is age 17 or over. Advise the taxpayer (or legal representative) to contact the SSA at (800) 772-1213 or visit their local SSA office to submit necessary record changes. It can take up to 10 days for the SSA to notify the IRS after updating the dependent’s information in their system. After granting the SSA and IRS sufficient time to update their records, re-transmit the return.
