16330: CA - Preparing DE-9 for e-Filing (DAS)

California

Drake Accounting®: How do I prepare and file the CA DE-9?

For filing to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), DAS produces:

  • A .csv file of the data reported on Form DE-9C, Quarterly Contribution Return and Report Of Wages (Continuation), for upload.
  • A PDF version of the DE-9/DE-9C for record-keeping purposes only.

California state law mandates electronic submission of tax returns, wage reports, and payroll tax deposits for all employers.

See Related Links below for required setup before creating the state wage report.

To prepare the CA DE-9:

  • Select the Employees or On the Fly menu, then select State Tax & Wage Forms.
  • Make sure CA is selected, then select DE-9 DE-9C from the Forms droplist.
  • Select the applicable quarter.
  • Review the form and make any necessary entries or edits.
  • Make sure the e-file checkbox is marked, then select Save/Print.

Save/Print creates the watermarked PDF for record-keeping purposes, as well as the .csv file for  upload to the CA EDD.

To upload the file:

  • Log in to the CA e-Services for Business website.
  • Follow the menu options to upload the file.
  • The file for upload can be found by browsing to the drive where DAS is installed > DrakeAccounting20YY > DAS20YYData (beginning in DAS2021) > Clients > client code > EFile > CA > CADE9 and selecting the file named CADE9_YYYY-MM-DD_HR_MIN_SEC.csv (where YYYY-MM-DD_HR_MIN_SEC is the date and time of the file creation.)
