Hosting on Rightworks: How do I print when using Drake Tax in the Rightworks Desktop?

 

Printing from the Rightworks desktop is facilitated by a program called TSPrint. This program is installed with the Rightworks Setup Wizard. TSPrint allows you to create a print job in Drake Tax or Drake Accounting and have that print job be completed by your local or network printer. You can easily select your local printer as the destination when printing from Drake Tax or Drake Accounting. There are a few settings that will need to be configured to allow you to easily print from your Rightworks desktop and Drake applications. 

TSPrint allows you to select any local printer with your Rightworks Desktop. There are no limitations based on brand or model.

TSPrint is installed during the initial Rightworks Desktop configuration when the setup wizard is used.

Note: You can also install TSPrint directly from the Terminal Works website, if needed, at a later time. If you are installing TSPrint independent of the setup wizard, ensure that you are logged out of the Rightworks Desktop and that all other remote desktop sessions are closed before running the installer. 

Single Printer Setup

If you only use a single printer in your office, you can set your Rightworks Desktop to always use the default printer by following these steps. 

Windows Steps

  1. On your Window's computer, go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Right click on the printer and choose Set as default printer
  2. Launch your Rightworks desktop. Log in and launch Drake Tax.
  3. Go to Setup > Printing and Device Setup > Printers. On each tab (F5 and F6), ensure that <Windows Default Printer> is shown for each type of print job. 
  4. Click Save
  5. Then when you print a return, follow these steps.
    1. Open the return. 
    2. Go to View mode. 
    3. On the All Forms tab, select the forms that you want to print and click the Printer icon. 
    4. In the drop list, TSPrint Default will be selected in the Printer drop list. 
    5. Click Print
    6. After a few seconds, the job will be sent to your local Windows default printer. 

Mac Steps

  1. On your Mac computer, go to the Apple Menu > System Settings
  2. Choose Printers & Scanners on the sidebar. Select the Default Printer menu on the right-hand side, then select an option.
  3. Launch your Rightworks desktop. Log in and launch Drake Tax.
  4. Go to Setup > Printing and Device Setup > Printers. On each tab (F5 and F6), ensure that <Windows Default Printer> is shown for each type of print job. 
  5. Click Save
  6. Then when you print a return, follow these steps.
    1. Open the return. 
    2. Go to View mode. 
    3. On the All Forms tab, select the forms that you want to print and click the Printer icon. 
    4. In the drop list, TSPrint Default will be selected in the Printer drop list. 
    5. Click Print
    6. After a few seconds, the job will be sent to your local Mac default printer. 

Multiple Office Printers

If you want to choose what printer to send the job to each time, follow these steps: 

  1. Launch your Rightworks desktop. Log in and launch Drake Tax.
  2. Go to Setup > Printing > Printer Setup. On each tab (F5 and F6), ensure that TS Print Printer is shown for each type of print job. 
  3. Click Save
  4. Then when you print a return, follow these steps.
    1. Open the return. 
    2. Go to View mode. 
    3. Select the forms that you want to print and click the Printer icon. 
    4. In the drop list, TSPrint Printer will be selected as the Printer
    5. Click Print
    6. A Print dialog box will display.
    7. Select your printer name in the drop list and click OK.
    8. After a few seconds, the job will be sent to your local Windows default printer. 

Sets Printing

To print sets from Drake Tax, follow these steps: 

  1. Launch your Rightworks desktop. Log in and launch Drake Tax.
  2. Go to Setup > Printing > Printer Setup. On the F6 tab, ensure that TS Print Printer is shown for each type of print job. 
  3. Click Save
  4. Then when you print a return, follow these steps.
    1. Open the return. 
    2. Go to View mode. 
    3. From the Sets tab, select the forms that you want to print and click the Printer icon. 
      • Take note of the sets that are being printed and the order they appear. This will be needed in the final printer selection step. 
    4. In the drop lists, TSPrint Printer will be selected as the Printer
    5. Click Print
    6. Print dialog box will display for the first set.
    7. Select your printer name in the drop list and click OK.
    8. After a few seconds, the job will be sent to your chosen printer.
    9. Another Print dialog box will display for the next set.
    10. Select your printer name in the drop list and click OK.
    11. After a few seconds, the job will be sent to your chosen printer. 
    12. Repeat steps 9-11 until all sets are printed.

Printing to PDF

To print a tax return to PDF, follow these steps: 

  1. Open the return. 
  2. Go to View mode. 
  3. Select the forms that you want to print.
  4. Click the black arrow to the right of the Printer icon.
  5. In the drop list, choose Print Selected Form(s) to PDF Document
  6. The Print Document dialog box displays. The Printer will default to Drake PDF Printer.
  7. Choose any additional options (i.e. Drake Documents, Drake Portals, Password protection, or Watermarks). 
  8. Click Print
  9. The Save As dialog box asks you where you want to save the document. 
  10. Choose or verify the location, then click Save
Common Issues

TSPrint Communication Error - A client communication error has occurred. Please check if you have TS Print Client installed. This error can also show if you are using third party RPD client or server.

  1. Log off of Rightworks (using the logoff button).
  2. Verify that TSPrint has been installed successfully on this computer.
  3. If it has not, manually install TSPrint from the Terminal Works website
  4. If it has been installed, attempt to log back in to your Rightworks desktop and send the job to the printer again. 

Incorrect license key or demo evaluation period expired

  • Contact Rightworks Drake Support at (828) 349-5556 for assistance. 

You cannot print to a physical printer from the Rightworks Desktop if using a tablet to connect to the desktop.
